Webcam or not? Does webcam enhance the quality of the lesson, worsens it, or it just doesn't matter whether or not you use it?

I haven't done a lesson without a webcam, but honestly, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it without. I prefer to have lessons with webcams because this way I can see the facial expressions of the teacher. It is so much easier to connect with the teacher when you can see his/her smile. :-) And the facial expressions and gestures give clues about what is said, so it is easier to understand the teacher. Also, it is easier to learn the pronunciation when you can watch the teacher's mouth. So, I personally only book lessons with teachers who offer video classes and show their faces.

I don't mind shutting off the camera when the internet connection is too bad, but wanting to see the teacher has nothing to do with online affection or looking for a friend. I have male and female teachers for multiple languages and as was pointed out already, seeing the mouth helps with the pronunciation and facial expressions and gestures help with understanding what is said. Learning the facial expressions and gestures of countries where the target language is used is also very important.

I'm with Miriam on this one. I like using webcams because I like seeing my teachers' facial expressions. It's extra feedback that helps me know if I'm messing up or not. Plus it makes the lesson more personable and since it's one-to-one training, I think that's important.

When I think of it, I often just minimize the teacher and only look at them occasionally, because during the lesson there are other things to look at. That with body language and seeing the mouth makes perfect sense, but for some reason I've never felt like I needed it. Maybe I can even focus on a conversation a bit better when there is no distraction in form of a video. On the other hand, I like to see them occasionally, or at least once, just to have a feeling that there is a person on the other side and know who I'm talking to. Although it's not even crucial as teachers have their videos anyway.

I'll add an interesting twist to this.  I plan on asking my teachers to sometimes turn off the webcam so that I can practice and focus on my listening comprehension.  I have to take a test over the phone, which means I won't be able to rely on the additional cues that are helpful for communication.
