Word order in Afrikaans.

The Sv1TOMPv2I(Stompie)-method:

Here is a guideline for how to conjugate different sentences in Afrikaans.

The Golden Rule: whatever you start with, the verb comes next.

STOMPI is an acronym for:

Sv1- subject (who/what?) followed by the 1st verb

T- time (when?)

O- object (who/what?)

M- mannar (how?)

Pv2- place (where?) followed by the 2nd verb

I- infinitive (in Afrikaans-> om te...)

If you don't start with "S", Golden Rule, the verb comes after whatever you start with. Then the rest of STOMPI. For example:

Tv1SOMPv2I

Mv1STOPv2

Pv1STOMv2I

Iv1STOMPv2

Easy, yes? :)

Example sentence: SvTOMPvI

Sentence: Ek doen elke aand my huiswerk vinnig by die huis.

T: Elke aand doen ek my huiswerk vinnig by die huis.

M: Vinnig doen ek elke aand my huiswerk by die huis.

P: By die huis doen ek elke aand my huiswerk vinnig.

*O: My huiswerk word deur my elke aand vinnig by die huis gedoen.

**v1: Doen ek elke aand my huiswerk vinnig by die huis?

*When you start with the object, the sentence becomes passive. The object is in the beginning of the sentence and becomes the subject and verb1 becomes "word" (dit is 'n hulpwerkwoord- auxiliary verb). This causes the original verb (v1) to move to the position of v2. The subject becomes the object and the word "deur" follows "word".

**Because you are starting with the verb, the sentence can no longer be a statement but a question. Same as in English: I am playing soccer. Am I playing soccer? As simple as that :)
