R.M.
England . Moquette

I was in a wonderful country like england and I would like to ask you about a little particolar.

I can't understand why I found moquette everywhere on the floor..even in the bathroom.

Why? Personally I think It is not confortable and healthy; it is really hard to clean..

furthermore I think it is really dangerous in case of fire.

Maybe is there a tradition or it was easy to find the raw material or maybe is it cheap?

Please, someone can illustrate to me the benefits? I need to learn about it.

I don't mean carpets.

thank you in advance

P.s. I'm only asking about a little particoular, I'm not criticizing a nation and people who I love.

You asked, R.M., but you asked in a rather aggressive, negative and confrontational way. Launching into a criticism of another country's customs is not an ideal way to promote a friendly discussion. Elizabeth dealt with your query remarkably politely, all things considered.

And yes, Omar, you are right. It is a little weird. But you are lucky to come from a warm sunny country. The UK is on a set of damp, cloudy  little islands, and there was a point in the mid-20th century when we thought it might be a nice idea to make our homes a bit cosier. Stepping out of a shower on a chilly morning is not a pleasant experience, and people thought that a nice soft fluffy carpet in the bathroom might make our cold grey lives  slightly less miserable. It was a mistake, as it happens, and it's now increasingly rare to find carpets in bathrooms.  Nobody carpets their bathrooms any more. Bathroom carpets are now generally only found in the homes of elderly people who maybe can't afford to have them replaced. If you look through any UK flooring brochure, you'll see only tiles, vinyl, and other hard finishes on bathroom floors. R.M. might be pleased to learn that Italian marble, both genuine and fake, is particularly popular among those who can afford it.

I just wanted to add that you need to be careful about the manner in which you remark on cultural differences that may seem strange to you, because those things will seem totally normal to the inhabitants of the country which you are criticising, and you may offend people.

Note: I was not offended. I have lived abroad in another country and I know what it is like to observe things that seemed strange and illogical to me because I come from another culture. I find it fascinating to analyse the differences and weigh up the pros and cons of doing things this way or that way. I understand that your comment was probably motivated by genuine curiosity, and nothing more, but it came across as a little bit negative.

Every country in the world has some things that may seem very logical to outsiders and may seem make a lot of sense, but also has certain other things that will seem strange to people from other countries because they have not grown up in that particular culture.

We just have to try and accept those differences and try to be tactful about how we remark on those differences.

Edit: Oh, how could I forget? An additional advantage is that carpets are so much quieter than hard flooring!!

Have you ever lived in a flat and had to endure the people above (or below) you walking around in high heels on a hard floor? It's a nightmare!

In many rented flats in Britain (especially social housing and council housing) the terms of the tenancy agreement stipulate that the tenants must have carpet fitted all throughout the property, to avoid causing a noise nuisance to other tenants.

I think you mean carpet.

We do not have carpets in the bath! Sometimes (although very rarely) some people have carpets in their bathroom.

Disadvantages

It is true that carpets can be difficult to clean and can be unhygienic if people do not remove their outdoor shoes.

It is also true that carpet can be flammable.

In addition, carpets are terrible for allergy sufferers because they harbour dust mites.

However, there are advantages to having a carpet as well.

Advantages

Contrary to what you say, carpets are in fact much more comfortable than other types of flooring, because they are softer.

In addition to being soft, they are also much warmer than hard surfaces. They help to insulate the floor (especially if a layer of underlay is used). A carpeted house will feel much warmer than a house with no carpets. Britain is a cold country. The more things we can do to keep our houses warmer, the better!

Carpets and rugs are also great for dogs or cats, because they keep their paws warm. It is horrible for house pets to have to walk on a cold bare surface that has no carpet. Britain is a nation of animal lovers. We really love our pets!

Carpets are also better for babies who are learning to crawl, because they are softer for their little hands and knees.

Carpets are also much safer than hard surfaces when it comes to falls and accidents, because they provide cushioning in the event of a fall. If somebody is going to trip and bang their head on the floor, it is much less painful to hit one's head on a nice soft carpet than to land on a hard surface.

Carpets make a British house look more furnished, cheerful, warm and cosy.

We actually call it moquette here too! It's funny I never knew it's a French word until today ;)

We also use moquette in our houses in Jordan, and bathroom mats set in the bathrooms.

The bathroom mats are so useful when fainting, you don't end up with bruises when falling on them :D

I definitely agree with Elizabeth and Su.Ki. regarding the way this question was asked.

@ Elizabeth

since you seem interested in French according to your profile....The English word carpet comes from an old French word "carpite" which means a rug!

In modern French the actual word "tapis" defines a rug! Carpette also exists in French but is used to describe someone who has a week character .
