Grammar question. I wish + was/were?

Hi!

I want to know if you say were instead of was even when you are talking about a singular noun in "I wish" structure. For example, what would you say "I wish she were here now" or "I wish she was here now? The rule says we must use were, but I want to know what you say in real life.

WERE is used in the singular in the Subjunctive Mood.

To state something hypothetical or contrary to fact, to talk about something that isn't true or when they are being wishful, English speakers often use the Subjunctive Mood.

e.g.: "If I were a millionaire, I would sail the Seven Seas"

As Perkeo says, the correct form is “were”. It’s correct to use “were” with all persons in the subjunctive mood (unreal conditions / wishes). In reality, most UK speakers don’t bother with the subjunctive except in very formal writing. The subjunctive is still used a lot by Americans, especially in writing or formal situations. “Educated” American English speakers use the subjunctive even in casual conversation. Also, you would need to use it properly if you were taking a college entrance exam in the USA. In casual conversation, on the other hand, it wouldn't be a high priority.

hey there! I would probably say "I wish she was here now" that sounds most natural to me when I say it aloud. You may well hear native speakers using either word in the sentence though, which is worth pointing out.

British English speakers use both in daily life. More educated speakers know that "were" is the more correct form, but we see "was" being widely used in most contexts. 

Here's an insider tip from Cambridge exams:

You will not be marked down for using "was", even in the sections aimed at testing grammar.

Most native speakers are going to use both interchangeably in this case. If lets say this was for a  a scholastic paper , the correct term would be were.
