How do you know when to use "Ap" or "tum" greeting in urdu?
I for the most part know with whom I need to use "ap" or "tum" greeting... I mostly use "ap" with mostly of all ages. One time I had used "tumne" with a older friend and he said that it is disrespectful to say that...? HowndonI know if I shouldn't use "ap" or "tum" with? ☹️

Aap = formal, where you show respect and love.
Tum = casual, unformal, e.g. with close friends, younger siblings etc.
Simply use aap with everyone and you will be considered Mannerly :)

With aap you are always on the safe (polite) side.
But close friends and others younger than you might expect to be called tum. Still, never use tum for anyone older or senior to you!
Sometimes this insecurity in addressing people comes from Panjabi habits where there is no 3-layer aap-tum-tuu, but 2-layer tusin-tuu being used. And it is easy to confuse the usage of tum and tusin.
