Why "al cine" is used for instead of el cine in the below sentence "mi hermana y yo iremos al cine".

El cine : the cinema

Al cine (contraction of the preposition a + the article el) : to the cinema

Therefore, to communicate that you are going to the cinema, you must say "al" because the idea of movement requires the preposition "a".

If you say "iremos el cinema", it literally translates to "we will go the cinema" which makes no sense.
