Are there only men in the chat?
I opened my account in Italki 3 month ago. I have had 40 messange in the mailbox, they are all men. Why? All messages are polite, but It´s so strange. Where are women?

Women just don't have time to send any message to anyone because they are all in reading messages from men

Now that several women replied to this discussion, I hope you’ll find someone to practice with. I speak to men and women and would say that the gender ratio of friends I met here is roughly 50/50. But I prefer to contact people myself because most users who contact me, don’t read my profile at all and are therefore in most cases not a good fit. If you want to receive fewer messages, it helps enormously to have a neutral avatar. When I display a photograph of myself I receive 5 unsolicited messages by men per day. With the current one (a cartoon character), I receive only one or two annoying messages per month. The rest are people who have actually something to say. I’m neither young nor pretty. Being female is enough to receive lots of male attention here.

Because a lot of men here, from certain countries, think this is a dating site, and not a language learning site. Also, you are lucky so far that they have all been polite. Some are not so polite, but the politeness is just a way for them to get you to reply, so don't be fooled.

They are busy learning languages(well, not all!) just like men are busy sending messages(well, not all!)

Maybe it's just some kind of cultural bias, belonging to a remote past:
- a man is the one supposed to have an active role, killing the dragon to save the princess, or simply asking for a date;
- a woman has to be pretty and patient, waiting to be rescued or chosen; some of them try to speed up things, hence some highly retouched portraits and, in some cases, swimsuits or other skimpy outfits.
I do not endorse these behaviours, but these models could explain a lot of otherwise inexplicable things.
