Birthday Customs A friend of mine recently went to Spain and told me that instead of giving "birthday spankings" (on your birthday, giving you a spanking for each year you have been alive. not in a sexual way, of course) they will pull on your ears. i thought this was so weird and funny!

what other customs are there around the world to celebrate birthdays?

Some people in Russia also follow this tradition - pulling on the ears of the person whose birthday is. Actually, I agree that it's weird :) In general, in Russia we don't have any special birthday traditions. They're is quite ordinary - celebrations, birthday cake, gifts and so on. Some people prefer to organise grand birthday parties with a lot of guests, some people prefer to celebrate their birthdays quietly among the nearest and dearest... However, most of the Russians usually celebrate the fiftieth anniversary as a particular event.

Well, that depends. No particular customs like spanking.
Usually, there will be a big birthday banquet for the eldest kid by the time of his 12. Or maybe 13 in different district. But just for the eldest . Other children will just have a simple celebration among family members.
