Hi Phoebe, the first thing is not to get discouraged. You can do it! Next, when people say that they have been learning a language for x amount of years it is actually meaningless. Does that mean 365 days a year 24 hours a day? Not usually, more like two to three hours a week, maybe. So if you figure out approximately how much time (hours or minutes) you actually spent learning or being exposed to English, it is probably not so much.

When people say English is easy, what they mean is that it is easy to learn badly! Most non native speakers who speak English well, know that it wasn't easy, and especially when you have an Asian mother tongue rather than a Germanic/Latin one. Personally I don't think that you can learn a language well and fast. I think that it's one or the other. And if someone else learns faster than you, you can learn from their methods, but apart from that it's irrelevant, because someone else is learning slower than you too, so what?

I'm guessing that you probably need to do a combination of taking a course, and also self-study.  There is a site that I've seen called Antimoon that seems to have a very good method. It's definitely worth having a look at. You should also expose yourself to a lot of enjoyable English content, in areas that interest you. Learn songs off by heart, or at least to be able to sing along with them. Watch programme you like with subtitles several times, until you can watch it without the subtitles.

These are just a few ideas. I'm sure that there are many more.

Good luck.

You should read a lot of english books/novels. And to understand what you're reading, keep a pocket dictionary with you. So that whenever you're confused or you don't know the meaning of the word, you can look it up on the dictionary.

Watch English movies, you can put in subtitles at first but as you learn english you will not need those subtitles anymore.

Listen to English songs and sing it. It is easier to study or memorize lyrics. so it will definitely help you.

Talk in front of the mirror using english language of course. Don't be shy, it will help you be confident with your speaking.

Try to listen to English audios for atleast 10-20minutes a day.

Hope this helped. Hwaiting!!

Well I have studied Korean for a year and cannot speak much either. And many people say Korean is easy. It is probably easy, but it very much differs from my native tongue, Dutch. English is perhaps easier than French or German, but if you are not native speaker of an indo European language, English could still be difficult for you. Like for me Korean is perhaps easier than Chinese or Japanese, but still, not that easy, since it is the first non indo European language I have studied. Remember that these are two total different language systems. Even Urdu or Hindi is closely related to English if you compare it to Chinese, I guess.
