der, die, das - Remember the gender of a german noun with an easy trick 1 In the german language are three articles “der”, “die” and “das”. Every noun has one gender, “maskulin”, “feminine” or “neutrum”. For example: The word “man” has a maskulin gender. We say “der Mann”. The word “house” has a neutrum gender. We say “das Haus”.The word “woman” has a feminin gender. We say “die Frau”. But sometimes is not logical, which gender we choose: The word “car” has a neutrum gender. Das Auto. The word “bike” has a neutrum gender, too. Das Fahrrad. But the word “train” has a maskulin gender. Der Zug. I don´t know, why we say “das Auto” but “der Zug”. Maybe it is an old grammar decision, we accept it to sit in a maskulin train, drive in a neutrum car or to rent a feminin carriage :-) So the bad answer is, that you have to learn every noun together with the right gender. It is not ever interesting to learn gender of nouns, so I thought about a way how to make it easy and more interesting...

der, die, das - Remember the gender of a german noun with an easy trick 1

In the German language there are three articles “der”, “die” and “das”. Every noun has one gender, “maskulin”, “feminine” or “neutrum”. For example: The word “man” has a masculine gender. We say “der Mann”. The word “house” has a neuter gender. We say “das Haus”. The word “woman” has a feminine gender. We say “die Frau”. But sometimes it is not logical which gender we choose (But sometimes there is no logic behind which we choose): The word “car” has a neuter gender. Das Auto. The word “bike” has a neuter gender too. Das Fahrrad. But the word “train” has a masculine gender. Der Zug. I don´t know why we say “das Auto” but “der Zug”. Maybe it is an old grammatical decision.
We accept sitting in a masculine train, driving in a neuter car or renting a feminine carriage :-) So the bad (unfortunate?) answer is that you have to learn every noun together with the right gender.

It is never interesting to learn the gender of nouns, so I thought about a way <strike>how</strike> to make it easy and more interesting...

The problem in German is that in some dialects genders are different. That introduces confusion into the whole system, hence no real hardwiring. For instance, did you know the word for "peach" (Pfirsich) is feminine in the local dialect, but masculine in Standard German? :)

All alcohol except beer is masculine. Beer likes to be drunk by every German person, not only men but women as well. So it is neutral.
