General note about corrections: do we correct too much? After reading many notebook corrections from native speakers or other learners, I have found that most of them tend to correct too much of the original text. Often without giving a hint if the correction was made because the original version was wrong or if it was just supposed to make it sound more natural. I think doing so can be demotivating for the student. The lack of explanation can mislead them into thinking that most of his original text was not grammatically correct even though it just did not natural from a native speakers point of view. I prefer changing as little as possible and only give hints how the text can be rewritten or changed to make it sound more natural. Being able to form correct sentences is more important, especially in the beginning, than being able to express thoughts like a native speaker would. Would you agree?

General note about corrections: do we correct too much?

After reading many notebook corrections from native speakers or other learners, I have found that most of them tend to correct too much of the original text.

Often without giving a hint if the correction was made because the original version was wrong or if it was just supposed to make it sound more natural.

I think doing so can be demotivating for the student. The lack of explanation can mislead the student into thinking that most of his or her original text was not grammatically correct even though it just wasn't natural from a native speaker's point of view. (Them & him should agree in number, though not doing so is a common error among native English speakers. Additionally, agreeing in gender can be awkward in English without being male-centric! Frequently people today conscioiusly chose the grammatically incorrect approach: The lack of explanation can mislead someone into thinking that most of their original text was not ...)

I prefer changing as little as possible and only give hints how the text can be rewritten or changed to make it sound more natural.

Being able to form correct sentences is more important, especially in the beginning, than being able to express thoughts like a native speaker would. (Yes, I agree, unless the sentence is completely awkward.)

Would you agree?

Interesting questions that you raise. Perhaps we could collectively come up with some conventions for how to mark something as an error or as a way to make it less awkward.

Thank you. I hope to get more opinions on this.

I absolutely agree about this, I noticed that too many corrections will change too much from the original. From my point of view as the notebook writer (the one who be corrected), I prefer to get the corrections with some grammatical structure's reasons which makes me feel that the answers are reliable enough. I hope the problem that noticed by Felix can make improvement in correcting notebook :) Thank you
