Halloween is celebrated on October 31st at night. Pumpkins are glooming in the windows. They have ugly faces to frighten the evil ghosts. People like to decorate their houses. Children love to dress up. They go from house to house calling: trick or treat!
The origin of Halloween is not clear. It was first celebrated in Ireland. Irish emigrants brought the tradition to the USA since 1830. It became very popular besides Christmas and Thanksgiving. In the 1990s Europe adopted the tradition partly.
Today parties are often criticised by the catholic church because November 1st is a calm holiday where celebrating is forbidden especially in Bavaria. The prohibition applies from 12 o' clock at night. In addition the catholic church complains about that the Halloween custom is replacing the tradition of Saint Martin on November 11th.
