An apple cost 20 times as they do normally Yesterday was Christmas Eve. Christmas is not a traditional festival here in China, it is celebrated and becomes more and more popular though, especially among young people. I believe this is the means of businesses, who like to take advantage of this occasion to make much money. Apples' price on this day is a typical example. As the Chinese for the word "apple" is homophonic to that of "Christmas Eve", people are tempted to believe that eating apples on that day will bring you peace and good luck. Therefore, on this day, people buy apples for their loved ones. The apples sold at the fruit stalls and supermarkets are marked with words like "wish you peace", "love" and other propitious words, and are packed in exquisite boxes. Normally apples are sold by weight, whereas on this special day, it is sold by number. An apple, especially sleek one, cost as high as 50CNY, almost 20 times the usual price. It's sort of ridiculous. In spite of this, there are still lots of people buying them. It's a trend that you can't avoid. You may feel embarrassed if you don't buy one for your girlfriend while all other girls are receiving this "magical" gift.

An Apples this week cost 20 times as much as they <em>(they is plural, an apple is singular)</em> do normally

Yesterday was Christmas Eve. Christmas is not a traditional festival here in China, it is celebrated and becomes more and more popular however though, especially among young people. I believe this is the means of caused by businesses, who which like to take advantage of this occasion to make as much money as they can. The price of apples' price on this day is a typical example.

As the Chinese for the word "apple" is homophonic to that of "Christmas Eve"<em> (pingguo huh? how is it homophonic? heping de ping? ping an ye? That's a pure Chinese invention)</em>, people are tempted to believe that eating apples on that day will bring you peace and good luck. Therefore, on this day, people buy apples for their loved ones<em> (as do teachers for school students)</em>. The apples sold at the fruit stalls and supermarkets are marked with words like "wish you peace", "love" and other propitious words, and are packed in exquisite boxes. Normally apples are sold by weight, whereas on this special day, it is they are sold individually by number. An apple, especially sleek one, costs as high much as 50CNY, almost 20 times the usual price. It's sort of/quite ridiculous. In spite of this, there are still lots of people buying them. It's a trend that you can't avoid. You may feel embarrassed if you don't buy one for your girlfriend while all other girls are receiving this "magical" gift. <em>(keep in mind that each apple gets individual attention, hand-writing and wrapping, so the is extra material and labour cost!)</em>
