How do I say THE in Japanese?
In Japanese I know they say これ、この、それ、その、あれ、あの。for saying this, that and it. But how would you say the? Example, I read THE book. Please help! Thanks! :)Just in case,:
これ、それ、あれ means THIS, THAT, IT which don't have noun just after them.
Ex.) This is my book. これは私の本です。(near to speaker)
That is hers. あれは/それは彼女のものです。(far from speaker or you've already talked about)
It is yours. それはあなたのです。(nearer to speaker thant THAT or you've already talked about)
この、その、あの is used just before the noun.
Ex.) This book is mine. この本は私のです。(near to speaker)
That book is hers. あの/その本は彼女のです。(far from speaker or you've already talked about)
The book is yours. その本はあなたのです。(nearer to speaker thant THAT or you've already talked about)
However, in many cases, there isn't big difference between あれ and それ, あの and その. Besides, since the Japanese language doesn't have articles, we don't say その for THE very often.
Ex.) The book is on the desk. 本が机の上にあります。/ There is a book on the desk. 机の上に本があります。
When you already talk about THE BOOK or THE DESK and you want to distinguish it from the others, you need to say その本/その机.

when the book is in the room where you (speaker) and the other person (listener) are.
これ、この when the book is near the speaker
それ、その when the book is near the listener
あれ、あの when the book is away from the speaker and the listener
* physical location of the book is important
when the book is NOT in the room where the speaker and the listener are.
それ、その when the speaker knows the book, but listener doesn't
あれ、あの when both the speaker and the lister know the book
* who knows of the book is important
