Hi! I have a quastion. How do you use the verb "to gain"?
1. I gained my weight.
2. My weight gained.
1. I'm gaining my hunger.
2. My hunger is gaining.
In the meaning 'I'm getting more and more hungry'. I know I could use "rise/increase/grow etc but I just wanna know how the verb "gain" is used properly.
Which pattern is correct? Perhaps both?
Someone gains sth or...
Something gains (itself)

Hello there
“Gain” is usually used when something can be measured with a number.
The value of the investment gained over summer
The speed of the car was gaining
He had gained weight
The plane gained 1000 feet in altitude
^ these are all good English
Pain gaining is wrong. We would say “increased” here.
Correct: the noise levels gained 20 decibels
Incorrect: the noise gained [increased would be better here]
Also: in British English we often say “He put on weight”

To the first question: "I gained weight" is correct. We would not ordinarily used "my" in the sentence. Weight is not an object we possess; it is a condition or state.
The second question: We would ordinarily not use gain in this sense. "My hunger is increasing" or "I'm growing hungrier by the minute" or "I'm getting hungry" are the most frequently used.
To the third question: Someone gains something is the most common structure. It depends on the statement being asked, however. No hard and fast rule applies to this.
