the word strike has very different meanings therefore, using it could depend on the context. A few examples could be :
1. Since there was a strike, everyone was advised to stay indoors to avoid getting hurt (meaning a protest).
2. John, you dont strike me as a person who likes cats (meaning John doesn't seem like a person who likes cats).
3. Strike can also be a name of a person.
4. it can also be used as a way to express an attack made
5. used to indicate a chiming sound- The clock struck (past tense) nine.

That's a hard question to answer, because, like you said, the word 'strike' has lots of meanings.
Here are some of the most common ones;
* To hit something
e.g. He looked like he was going to strike me.
* For a thought/idea to come into your mind suddenly or unexpectedly
e.g. It struck me that it might be a good idea after all.
* To cancel, remove or cross out
e.g. His name was struck from all records.
* To refuse to attend work or school in protest of something
e.g. The workers were on strike due to poor working hours.
* When a clock indicates the time with a chime or stroke
e.g. The clock struck twelve.
Hopefully that helps :)
