There are several reasons why English pronunciation can be challengingāstress placement is one of them.
Knowing where to place the stress in words is quite difficult because:
1ļøā£ There are several common stress patterns and many exceptions.
2ļøā£ Unlike languages such as Spanish and Italian, there are no reliable rules or marks to let us know where to put the stress in a word.
Using correct stress placement is important as it ensures that listeners can understand you; it can also distinguish the meaning of words.
For example, many noun-verb homographs exist in English. These homographs typically have two syllables. In such cases, the stress is usually placed on the first syllable in nouns and the second syllable in verbs.
Take a look at these examples, then try to answer the question below. ā¬ļø
In the following sentence, which syllable should be stressed in the word "desert"?
"He didn't want to desert his friends in their time of need."
First syllable (DEsert)
Second syllable (deSERT)
