In Japan, religion is not based on one god or one clear teaching. Instead, it is more flexible, with many layers. Buddhism and Shinto exist side by side. People also believe in nature spirits and respect their ancestors. Because of this, even if someone doesn’t say, “I am Buddhist,”
they still do religious things in daily life.
