동동 (dongdong) in 동동주 (dongdongju)
I have been having a discussion with a friend on the meaning of 동동 (dongdong) in 동동조 (dongdongju). Specifically, in whether 동동 (dongdong) is the derived from the same word as 동 (dong).
Would you please give us both a translation and an etymology for these words so we can compare and contrast? I'm sure we would both really appreciate that. :)
Because this friend does not read Korean, please make sure that answers are written so an English Speaker can understand it. Correction in the body. 동동주, not 동동조. Sorry for the typo. We are looking for the meaning and etymology of 동동 in 동동주.

We use the word 동동 as a mimetic word when something is floating either on the water or above the sky. So the drink is called 동동주 because rice grains on the drink look like as if some ants are floating on the water.
For more information 동동주 is 경기 province's traditional drink and for the other name it's called '부의주(浮蟻酒:floating ant drink). hope this helps and have a nice day.
