What's the difference between "if I was/ if I were" : I learnt we use "was" in simple past for I/ he/she/it, and "were" is used for you/ we/they. So what's the reason for using both forms: I was/I were?

The expression "if I were" is subjunctive mood. It suggests the idea of a hypothetical situation. "If I were you, I would be more careful".

Randy is correct, but many people use "if I was you" in hypothetical situations, even though "if I were you" is the correct way to say it.
