What is university college? There're some institutions of higher education named as such and such 'university college'. I fell it somewhat odd. Why aren't they directly called 'university' or 'college'? What 'university college' literally mean? Or, are there any historical reasons for it? Thank you!

In the United States, these are schools which provide training to adults that generally does not lead to a college degree. The adults can be high school or college graduates. The idea is to get enough training in a particular field in order to be "certified" in that field and get a job typical to the field. Graduates get a certificate or diploma, but, unlike a college degree, the course credits will not count towards a similar course of study at another school. In some cases, this is a division of a regular college or university that offers "alternative adult education" or "tertiary education" through the university college. They compete with other schools that do not call themselves university colleges. As a group, university colleges and their competitors are called "for profit schools" in the USA.
