Structure of Essay When you write an essay, there are two solutions to deal with a same question. Acturally, both of them can not completely resolve the problem. They all have some advantages and disadvantages. In this essay, you choose one of two solutions, such as A and try to prove A is a better solution than B. So, what is the correct structure of this kind essay? should I only write the advantages of A? or write the advantages of A and the drawbacks of B? or both the advantages and the disadvantages of A and B, and the draw a conclusion? or great advantages and slight disadvantages of A and slight advantages and great disadvantages of B? Which kind of structure is better?

Your essay structure must be determined by: 1. The intention of the essay (What do you want to accomplish with the essay?) 2. The audience of the essay (Who will be reading it?) 3. The requirements of the essay (Are there specific requirements that would give preference to a specific structure?) Generally speaking, an essay of the type you have suggested would be best structured by giving both the advantages and the disadvantages of A and B, and then drawing a conclusion. More information is usually better than less information.

I believe your are talking about the argumentation pattern of essay. In this pattern, it is important to acknowledge opposing points of view in a reasonable way, then rebut them. If you do not feel strongly about either A or B, then perhaps the compare and contrast pattern would be better. Compare and contrast allows more flexibility to you as a writer.

This is not about essay writing. This is POLITICS. Ask a politician. They are well versed in this kind of argumentation.
