I don't get 'drew him doodles' in the sentence. I laughed and drew him doodles, drank and undressed with him in the loose detachment of a Monday night, but I kept telling myself this was as far as I would go. -------------------------- I don't get 'drew him doodles' in the sentence.

"Doodle" is a colloquial term for amateur drawings. The word order makes "him" the indirect object of "drew". "Drew him doodles" means "drew pictures for him". If the word "drew" is unclear to you, it is the past tense of "to draw" (to make pictures).

To draw doodles could mean drawing shapes on paper that does not resemble anything, or it could mean drawing something that is identifiable. It might just bean "scribbling".
