long = horizontal things.
tall = vertical things.

"Tall" is always referring to the verticle height of something or someone. "Long" is the measurement of the longest dimension of something and is not normally used when referring to someone's height (although it can be).
"Long" can also refer to a length of time or a distance.

well peachey was correct and another way of saying that is long refers to length
and tall refers to height
