Well, "cleanse" has the extra meaning of "to purge" or "to purify through cleaning". It's very thorough.
In day-to-day speech, you'd normally use "to clean".

[What difference between to clean and to cleanse]
Cleanse = Verb
Clean = Adjective
Adjective = class of words that modify nouns and pronouns, primarily by describing a particular quality of the word they are modifying,
Verb = typically expresses an action, state, or a relation between two things, and that may be inflected for tense, aspect, voice, mood, and to show agreement with their subject or object.
In a simple form think Cleanse as an action and Clean as a Result of that action. I cleansed the clothes in soapy water to make them clean.
Hope that helps.
