Writing "ae" instead of "æ" is a common substitution when not having an "æ" on the keyboard, but it is only that, a substitution and not correct in standard language.
Here's how I would write an "æ" on paper. Notice that it is slightly different from the way it looks on a computer:

(His "å" is not very good, it needs to be a ring not just a dot)
