Pawn off? What does these phrases mean? "Pawn off" "be on hold"

"pawn off" = to get rid of or pass off something unwanted or not desired, usually by deception. Ex: he tried to pawn off the fake gemstone as a diamond. "to be on hold" = waiting; temporarily halted. Ex: The building project is on hold while we try to find money to complete it. We put our wedding plans on hold until we finished school.
