What is the difference between "constant" and "perpetual"? He was bothered by the _______ bark of dogs in the neighborhood every night. "constant" and "perpetual" Which word should be used to fill in the blank? Why? What is the difference between them?

I wouldn't use perpetual here ... constant is fine - and another 'good' word is 'incessant' - other words are 'unceasing' or 'ceaseless'. Perpetual is used for 'eternal' or 'life-long', and also used in colloquial phrases like 'perpetual nagging'

In this context they can both be used as they are synonyms. However the two should not be confused if talking in a scientific or mathematical context, e.g. a mathematical constant.
