Why is Putonghua called Mandarin?..
Mandarin and Putonghua(PTH for short) are totally different, Mandarin contains 8 different varieties, even my mother tongue is Mandarin, it's Southwestern Mandarin, which is a little bit different from PTH, especially in phonetics(only a little bit different), and tones(I think this is quite different), vocabulary, we have many local words that PTH doesn't own..and the grammars are the same...
Well...many non-Chinese are learning Mandarin, but eventually it turns out that they're only learning PTH...
So I am curious why Putonghua is called Mandarin..?

Historically, mandarin is the word we used to refer to public officials of the Chinese empire. Hence, also the language they spoke. A tangerine is also called a mandarin orange. China means porcelain ware. Strange language, English.

Aren't they the same thing? Putonghua is the pinyin of 普通话 ie. Mandarin.

I have studied some mandarin and the instructor always said that the way to say Mandarin in mandarin is Putonghua. I think maybe only the people from that region would understand the subtle differences in accents and some terms, but as far as the language, you mentioned the grammar is the same so it probably is the same as Mandarin
