The correct word here is "made", because the doctor "insisted that he write" or "forced him to write" the letter.

"Let" would mean that the man wanted/intended to write the letter, and the doctor "allowed him" or "gave him permission" to write it. (It's unlikely that the man would need the doctor's permission to write a letter, or that the doctor could/would stop him from doing it.)

*BTW: The doctor's name is misspelled in the second line of your second paragraph. (Unless his name is "Lied" and not "Lieb", of course.)

Hello. "Made" is better, because the doctor is forcing, urging, compelling, encouraging the man to write the letter. "Let" would imply that the doctor is allowing the man to do something he is going to do anyway.
