Hello. Talking about time (pm, am) I am listening for a sound track of learning program in English. http://elc.polyu.edu.hk/IELTS/li/ex/li_ex_tips.htm#2#1#8 One of the characters there says that a film will be screening at 12:30 ( without specifying weather it is 12:30 after noon or 12:30 at night). I am asked to choose one of possible options: 12:30 am 12:30 pm I have chosen 12:30 am and it turned out a wrong answer. Can you please tell me why ? Thanks, Boris.

This is a very strange question. There is no possible way of knowing whether '12.30' is half an hour after midnight or after midday. It could be either.

12:30am is 00:30 hours military time (24-hour clock). The program probably just thinks you're more likely to watch a movie during lunch than the middle of the night. :-)

I agree that this question is not specific enough. There is no way to tell from just "12:30" whether they meant am or pm. I think either could be correct. Yes, people could go to a movie screening at 12:30 pm (afternoon). But when new movies come out that are very popular, many people line up and wait hours for 12:30am screenings. Either answer could have been correct. The question should have been more clear. You did a good job.

I guess a film screening might be more prone to be around lunch though. Hmm.

I agree with Su.ki that this is a strange question and that it could be either. Hehehe. Although, a lot of times here in the United States, they release movies at midnight and many people go to see that "special showing", especially if the movie is very popular. Of course, for me at least, it would be strange to go to a movie around noon Mon-Fri because I work from 9am to 5:30 pm. This person would have to be seeing the movie on a weekend or must be in retail or must have a job with hours other than the standard 9-5 to be seeing a movie around noon. LMFAO. :)
