I can't understand the long sentence that explains about the meaning of "beyond" It can mean to extend, continue or progress beyond a particular thing or means to extend or continue further than that thing or point. For example:'Few children ramain scholl beyond the age of 16.

So, if "the age of 16" is "a particular thing", then "beyond" means "continue further than the age of 16". This would include age 17, 18, and higher. The full sentence means that children do not normally remain in school when they are age 17, 18, or older.
