You're right, arithmetic is a part of mathematics. It is usually the first maths we learn at school. It is to do with numbers and the basic operators: addition [+], subtraction [-], multiplication [x] and division [/]. You could compare it to other branches of mathematics such as geometry, topology, game theory, etc.
