How are these different? "When we had spare time between classes, we (met/ would meet) in the backyard of the school to work on the assignment bit by bit." I am wondering if both "met" and "would meet" are possible to use in this sentence. And if so, what is the difference between them?

They are both possible. These forms have exactly the same meaning, but the 'would meet' form reinforces the idea that this is something which happened regularly.

I think you should say : " met " .. because " met " is the past tense of the verb " meet " .. and this sentence talk about something that happen in the past ..
