What's the difference between 'before' and 'beforehand'? What's the difference between 'before' and 'beforehand'? Does 'beforehand' have different meaning? Thanks a lot for your help in advance! Hyunwook

'Before' is a preposition, and sometimes an adverb. 'Beforehand' is always an adverb. You should have told us about this problem beforehand. (adverb) You should have told us about this problem before take-off (preposition) The relationship between 'before' and 'beforehand' is the same as between 'after' (a preposition) and 'afterwards' (an adverb). We can talk about this afterwards. We can talk about this after dinner.

I'm pretty sure it's that 'beforehand' specifically refers to an action that's been performed recently in light of the current timeframe the speaker is in, whilst before refers to the past in general.
