What does the expression "go down the pit" mean?

It probably means to go down in to a mine [pit], descend [go down] a mine shaft. In the UK, this would most likely be understood to be a coal mine, but it could be any deep mine.

You need to provide more context so we know what kind of pit it refers to and if it's literal or metaphorical.
