What's the difference between 'produce a film(movie)' & 'make a film'? I have just tried to figure out the film terminology. What's the difference between 'produce a film(movie)' & 'make a film'?

I work in entertainment in Hollywood. Basically, "producing" a film means you're involved in the business side of it. You're raising and managing the budget, hiring the crew, getting it to distributors, giving development notes, trying to keep everyone working together smoothly. It's a little more behind-the-scenes. "Making" a film is more of a general term, but it usually refers to the physical process of making it (with cameras, actors, a script, etc). So a person "making a film" could be the one directing it, or filming it, or writing it. Or all three. Also, a person who is producing a film may say they are "making a film" as a broader term.. But a person making a film (like directing) wouldn't usually ever say they are "producing a film."

This is an interesting question. In everyday English, the two mean the same thing, and actors, directors, financiers, cinematograhers, etc, may legitimately say that they are making or producing a movie. Within the industry (including film critics and financiers), the terminoloigy takes on more precise and nuanced meanings. In general, a producer produces a film. A producer is like the CEO of the project. The person who is generally thought to be the one who is "making the movie" is the director. If we move on to the noun "production" in this vein, then it takes on a more specific meaning of a stage in the project that is distinct from other stages such as concept, development, pre-production, etc. The production stage is generally understood to be or defined as "Talent is on set and cameras are now rolling." Films that have commenced principal photography are in the production phase or stage. I hope prectitioners in the movie sector/arts will come forward to discuss this further.
