your favourite book by Virginia Woolf?
The other day, I read a couple of pages from Virginia Woolf's novel '' Mrs Dalloway'' and it was depressingly difficult. Stream-of-consciousness novels are tough, at least for me. I also found difficulty when I read ''A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man'' by James Joyce and I'm taking Virginia Woolf as a challenge. So, is there any steps I should take before reading her books and what's your favourite book by her?

Hi Omnia, nice to meet you! I'm trying to improve my reading skills too but in my personal experience I gave up with those kind of books. The reason is that I felt very overwhelmed because I could understand a word out of six! I don't now which is your english level, I'm on B1 I assume and I started reading classical novels from "The black cat publishing". I find it very useful because novels are adapted to your english level, so you could read an A2 text or B1 text...and improve your reading ability. When you got confident on a particoular level you can move to the next step. I've just finished "Dracula" by Bram Stocker which was very interesting, and before that I read "The Canterbury Tales" by Geoffrey Chaucher. These books are also sold on line on the web site www.blackcat.com and there are also internet activities to do!
When I will be good enough I will start with the original books...
cheers

Hey Mark, I studied Joyce's A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man in college that's why I could slightly understand it :D As for Woolf, I'm confused between ''To The Lighthouse'' and ''Orlando'' because the plot of ''Orlando'' is quite captivating.

Hi, many native English speakers struggle with stream of consciousness novels. I don't mind Woolf but I detest Joyce. I do however love Marcel Proust. Go figure, an Englishman preferring a French author :-)
If I was forced to pick a Woolf novel it would be "To the Lighthouse" as much to do with the fact it is supposedly based partly on her childhood memories of a lighthouse near where I live, not where set in the book
