a little hard stence' meaning? For a week or so leading up to your quit date, keep a log of your smoking. I don't understand "leading up to your quit date"?

It is weird wording but they mean keep track of how much you smoke so you are more aware of it and hopefully smoke less and less until you completely go all out cutting your smoking habits from your lifestyle. By quit date they mean the final effort to end your smoking habits, the day when you say after today I will never smoke again.
