Hi, Herbert, if you're looking for some classics, Dickens (maybe surprisingly) has comedy, action and deep characters, especially Bleak House and Tale of Two Cities (yes, you have to endure the first 50 to 100 pages just to get the hang of his style), speaking of modern literature, you could probably try Cassandra Clare, if you're the one for fantasy, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, if you're into funny and educational stuff written for kids but meant for adults, or try Roald Dahl or Oscar Wilde for brilliant humor and capturing stories.

I really enjoyed 'The Fault in Our Stars' :) if you haven't read that one yet it's worth checking out!
