I'd also say "hair tie" if I want my hair tied into a ponytail. Maybe it's different in other places, but I understand that "hairband" is a U-shaped bad which fits over the whole head and keeps the hair away from the face.
If you want something larger, soft and (maybe) colourful, look for "scrunchie"

Just make sure in the product description it says metal free. The ones with metal are not as good and hard on hair.
