I'd also say "hair tie" if I want my hair tied into a ponytail. Maybe it's different in other places, but I understand that "hairband" is a U-shaped bad which fits over the whole head and keeps the hair away from the face. If you want something larger, soft and (maybe) colourful, look for "scrunchie"

Hairband. I usually buy them in the store though. Here is a link to some on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Scunci-Effortless-No-damage-Elastics-Assorted/dp/B001T8QJM0/ref=sr_1_7?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1456303640&sr=1-7&keywords=hairband Just make sure in the product description it says metal free. The ones with metal are not as good and hard on hair.
