While “very” is usually an adverb, it can be used as an adjective as well, but only before a noun. From the MacMillan: “as an adjective (only before a noun): They went down to the very bottom of the sea. ♦ The car exploded before my very eyes.” http://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/british/very The Oxford provides some additional examples: https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/very
