What's the difference between proposal and proposition?

Proposal:
noun (plural proposals)
1. suggested idea or plan: a suggestion or intention, especially one put forward formally or officially
2. act of proposing: the act of making a suggestion or stating an intention
3. request to marry somebody: a request for somebody to enter into marriage
4. politics law draft law from EC: a draft law proposed by the European Commission to the Council of Ministers

Proposition:
noun (plural propositions)
1. proposal: an idea, offer, or plan put forward for consideration or discussion
2. statement: a statement of opinion or judgment
3. offer of sexual intercourse: an invitation to have sexual intercourse
4. private agreement: a private deal or agreement
5. somebody or something to be faced: somebody or something to be dealt with (informal)
The news that he would be there certainly made the party a more attractive proposition.
