"He is merry and gay" for natives
Do you use the word "gay" to describe people happy and cheerful? I saw this sentence in an article written by a native, which I'm pretty sure.
But in my opinion, " gay" is very likely to make misunderstanding and it's connected with people who are gay. I wonder do natives use it a lot in daily life?

The word "gay" does mean cheerful, happy and was commonly used to mean just that until it got adopted by the homosexual community (or perhaps their detractors). These days (in America) if you used the word "gay" you would most likely be referring to someone in the LBGTQ community and it would be interpreted that way. That does not make the person who wrote "gay" incorrect however, but it could cause confusion.
