Please help me understand this passage from Pinocchio.
Mangiafoco asks Pinocchio about his father, Geppetto: <Guadagna molto?>
Pinocchio: <Guadagna tanto quanto ci vuole per non aver mai centesimo in tasca......>
What does Pinocchio's reply mean???

I think it's a kind of joke, Pinocchio says that is father "earns what is needed not to have a pence in his pockets", so he's saying that he's actually poor.

... he earns enough to don't have a dime in is pocket... it's a metaphor for he's broken
