What is the meaning of 着-- 著 Hi all. I'm studying a short chinese story called "A Vat of Water". The language is Mandarin Chinese and the characters are in Simplified Form. Then I found the following sentence: - 她指著“太”字说…… - tā zhĭ zhe "tài" zì shuõ: ... - She pointed out the character "tài" and said: ... Now the PDF file didn't allow me to read that 著 well, so I searched on "archchinese.com" , but finding any "ZHE" as 著. But in conclusion I found that: 1) 著 is the "Traditional form of 着." - 着 [ zhē, zhāo, zhuó, zháo ] to catch, to receive, to suffer, to make move, to take action, auxiliary word (always behind verb) 2) 著 is another word in Simplified form - 著 [ zhù, zhuó ] to make known, to show, to prove, to write, manifest, book, outstanding My question is: Did the author confuse with 着 or she really meant to use 著 ? Because I do not understand the grammar of that sentence above. 谢谢

“著”不是“着”的繁体字,是“着”的异体字。异体字常见于文言文中,不过看您提供的句子不像文言文。我猜有两种可能:1)您的文章来源于台湾或香港。作者可能觉得用“着”太直白,语感不够好。 2)印错了。 两个字的意思是一样的,但是考HSK时用“着”就可以了。

It's a bit weird to use it as 著 in simplified Chinese characters, but it still makes sense. It does have the alternative pronunciations e.g. "Zhuo" but in reality these characters started off as alternative forms of the same word and one was simply chosen for simplified Chinese. Also, in this scenario it's definitely "zhe" which means your translation isn't quite right. It should be continuous as it is attached to the verb "to point". Therefore, it should be "she is (or was) pointing at the character "太“ saying / and said...". Hope this helps!

If you are certain that the article is written in the form of simplified Chinese, it should be 指着,指著doesn't make any sense

简单点说,事实上都可以。毕竟简体字是一小队专家组定的规矩,但语言其实是丰富多彩的。
