The construction of the Via Costeira (Coastal Highway), almost 10 km (6.2 miles) long was a milestone for the tourist activity in the State in the 1980s because the Coastal Highway was built along the shore and cliffs. Natal has several tourist attractions and it is famous for its natural beauty, historical monuments, its beaches (such as Ponta Negra, Pipa and Genipabu), and also, for its off-season carnival, the Carnatal. The city also boasts the biggest cashew tree in the world and the largest urban park on the dunes of Brazil, the Parque das Dunas.
