In the sentence "Abrí la puerta de mi automóvil y salí del mismo" I don't think it's redundant saying "del mismo", because you don't want to mention the car again so you say del mismo referring to the car. the translation in english would be "it" exemple: I opened my car's door and I got out of "it"
