To Juliette’s comment I would add that in France people still use VOUS to adress themselves to any stranger and not only to show respect towards hierarchically superior person. I say “vous to the waiter, the vendor in a shop, to my boss etc.

Hi, "Tu" is for a friend, a person you know well. It's familiar. "Vous" is for a higher person hierarchically, it's respectful. You can use "Vous" for a teacher, your employer, etc.. "Vous" is also used to talking to few people at the same time. Ex: "Vous êtes tous invités à venir chez moi".
