Family issues or family matters , are they different things?
When someone is absent from work , what should you say , he's absent because of family issues or matters?

He's absent because he's got some family matters to take care of.
***This is quite neutral and in general, someone might think that his kid got sick so he had to go pick them up from school or something similar, but not too serious.***
He's absent because of family issues.
***This implies more seriousness. It could mean divorce, hospitalization, and so on.***
